i just need an early night
“I just need an early night” explores self-portraiture within the domestic space.
Through analogue techniques, it has been entirely removed from blue light technology to
ground the viewer into their own environment. It brings to the surface the unease that comes
with vulnerability and disconnection within what should be comfortable spaces. Utilising
surrealist ideologies, this project delves into the subconscious and visualises the feeling of
distortion stemming from Alice in wonderland syndrome, where space and scale are
unstable. Where softness and security from the material domestic space should be found,
instead discomfort and suffocation take place. Through unexpected and unnatural
interactions with the environment and through concealing the identity of the person in the
photographs, the unknown is encouraged. It can lead us to question how an environment can
engulf us.
